About
I am Kathy Graves, the artist behind Red Head Earthworks art studio, specializing in creative, functional and sculptural ceramics and woodworking. I taught art for 29 years, 19 of those being high school ceramics. Recently I retired from teaching and I am now creating art full time, both functional and sculptural. My two sons, Eric and Jason, are the redheads that inspired the name “Redhead Earthworks”.
I turned from teaching art to creating art when our youngest son, Jason, died suddenly in a hiking accident in Wyoming, August of 2023. This was devastating and while I love teaching ceramics to high school art students, my life changed forever and I need to find a way to keep living and work with the profound grief.
Through my art I am finding a way to honor Jason and his love of nature and the environment. My work is inspired by the beauty and movement of form, lines, colors and textures of the natural world. In my graduate work and my early professional art career I created abstract, wood sculptures and I developed my love for ceramics while teaching the medium and having my hands in mud almost daily. Currently, I use both wood and ceramics while creating functional and decorative pieces.
